More Than Just a Market Ranking: Why Being Near My Grandkids Means Everything (And How I Help Families Do the Same)
Every few weeks, another national headlines lands in my inbox touting the growth of the Triangle. Recently, Yahoo Finance shared national rankings highlighting Raleigh as the #1 real estate market in the country.
When housing analysts look at our region, they talk in data points: steady job growth, balanced economic demand, healthy housing turnover, and high quality of life.
But when I look at those headlines, I don't just see market statistics. I see families.
The Real Reason People Are Moving to the Triangle
As a Realtor, I read market reports daily. But as a grandparent living right here in Wake County, I know the real force driving so many of our real estate moves today: family connection.
I’ll be the first to tell you—I am not moving anywhere. Being close to my grandkids, watching them grow up, attending their weekend games, and being there for mid-week dinners is priceless to me. No housing trend or market cycle could ever convince me to leave.
Over the last few years, a huge portion of my practice has shifted toward helping families navigate this exact life stage:
-
Welcoming Grandparents to the Area: I’ve helped dozens of parents and grandparents relocate to Raleigh, Wendell, Cary, and surrounding communities so they can be 10 or 15 minutes away from their children and grandchildren instead of a plane ride away.
-
Helping Local Seniors Relocate Out of State: On the flip side, when clients’ adult children move across the country for work or lifestyle changes, I’ve walked alongside those clients to sell their longtime Triangle homes so they can follow their grandkids to their next destination.
The "Grandparent Migration" Trend
Whether you call it long-distance parenting, intergenerational living, or the "grandparent migration," the desire to share daily life with family has become one of the biggest catalysts in residential real estate.
When clients reach out to me wanting to move closer to their grandkids, the search is rarely just about bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s about answering deeper questions:
-
Location & Proximity: How close can we get to the grandkids without sacrificing our own independent lifestyle and hobbies?
-
Right-Sized Living: Do we want a low-maintenance townhome, a single-level home with an owner's suite on the main floor, or space for the grandkids to stay over on weekends?
-
Community & Amenities: Where can we find active social groups, parks, walkable downtowns, or pickleball courts to enjoy our own chapter here?
What Raleigh’s #1 Ranking Means for You
If you're considering buying or selling to bridge the distance with your family, Raleigh’s strong market fundamentals work in your favor:
-
For Buyers Moving In: Buying into a top-ranked market protects your long-term equity while giving you access to world-class healthcare, great parks, and vibrant suburban hubs like Wendell, Wake Forest, and Apex.
-
For Sellers Moving Away to Be Near Grandkids: Strong demand in the Triangle means equity built up in your current home can often fund your next move smoothly, giving you the flexibility to transition toward family.
